What is Business Voyages?
Among other things Business Voyages is a book about freedom, showing how the author separated himself from a co-dependent family to become successful.
The first part of Business Voyages documents difficulties the author experienced finding a satisfying career. He got accepted at two law schools but didn't go; he became an entrepreneur, in his hometown; he tried corporate life as an employee. He made some money in his entrepreneurial ventures, but he had problems adjusting socially in the small town where he grew up, where most adults continued to see him as they always had, where most young people his age had gone elsewhere. He got fired for talking back to his corporate boss.
A major goal of the author at age 22 was to pay his own way from then on, which he almost did, with the exception of two $1,000 loans from his parents, which he paid back by age 28.
He earned a doctorate in the Texas Tech University business school, studying and teaching as a part-time instructor four years, where he luckily encountered some professors who thought he had potential and most of his undergraduate students thought he was a good teacher.
The middle part of the book is about how to learn and teach entrepreneurship, presenting basic concepts and techniques for entrepreneurial and small business planning, finance, accounting, marketing, and operations management.
The latter part of the book is about what went wrong with the US economy after 1980 and what the author thinks should be done about it. He decided there is a major difference between small business and big business, a difference all Americans should be aware of if the US economy is ever to provide decent economic opportunities for all citizens.
Business Voyages presents original perspectives and ideas designed to help individuals discover and co-construct satisfying business worlds and careers, regardless of how large corporations, lobbyists and politicians rig the economy in favor of large corporations.
Satisfied readers use Business Voyages as a reference book to analyze their own experiences in careers in businesses and jobs, opening the book again and again dealing with new issues. Richard John Stapleton, PhD, is an emeritus professor of management whotaught business policy and business ethics 37 years, who worked 10years for his parents in their small businesses at Wolfforth, Texas,started from scratch, including a lumber yard and hardware store,farms, ranches, a housing subdivision, a natural gas pipelineinstallation and service business, a farm irrigation and home waterpump installation and service business, and a bank. He started and ranthree businesses of his own before returning to academia where hesupervised student teams consulting with over 300 small businesses anddirected the Georgia Southern University Small Business Institute 18years. He has published in various media, including 47 refereedarticles and 4 books. He lives near Statesboro, Georgia and Franklin,North Carolina with his wife Debbye and their two dogs and two cats.

Finding the Way

A friend sent me a copy of Business Voyages, to entertain me in my early "retirement," to encourage me in finding my way during these uncertain times, and, perhaps, to provide me with a map and some guidelines to get where I want to go.
It was a very nice and greatly appreciated gift.
The book is almost like a year-long, small-group graduate seminar with your favorite teacher, as Professor Stapleton reminisces about growing up as the son of the local successful entrepreneur in a small West Texas town, quarterbacking the football team, working his way through college and starting his own businesses, before deciding that he had something to offer to students who want to learn about running a business.
Take a while, read the book slowly and take to heart what the good professor has to say. It's worth the time and the price.
