This slow-moving addition to Beverley's Company of Rogues series (St. Raven, etc.) fails to hold the reader's attention, despite its likable protagonists. Laura, "Lady Skylark" to the London elite, was a dazzling 18-year-old when she married Hal Gardeyne, the heir to the Caldfort estate. Six years later, Laura, now a widow, finds herself a virtual prisoner at Caldfort, kept there because she can't leave her son, Harry, in the hands of Hal's forbidding family. Worse, she suspects that Harry may be in danger because he's next in line to inherit Caldfort, and if something were to happen to him, his possibly malevolent uncle Jack could claim the estate. When Laura discovers a mysterious letter implying there may be a missing heir to the estate, she teams up with her old friend, Stephen Ball, and devises a plan to whisk Harry to safety and uncover the secret behind the missing heir. For much of the novel, Laura and Stephen secretly pine for each other as they share close quarters in a little seaside town, but their scruples prevent them from acting on their shared passion. The mystery, which hinges precariously on some overheard phrases and unfounded suppositions, develops just as slowly, and readers may have a tough time holding out for the denouement.

Jo Beverley is widely regarded as one of the most talented romance writers today. She is a four-time winner of Romance Writers of America's cherished RITA Award and one of only a handful of members in the RITA Hall of Fame. A very twisty journey

A lot of plotting and puzzles. If you really like that you will enjoy this. I found it somewhat long and distracting from the romance. The H/h spend a lot of time in their heads. Characters eventually develop and that is nicely done.

Good story of the good people verses the bad. The characters are strong and passionate. I gave this book a four star rating because it lacked an epilogue otherwise I would recommend this book to all romantic's.

It all depends

Whether or not you like this book or are disappointed in it all depends on why you like Jo Beverly's books in the first place. If you are a fan because you like her somewhat swashbuckling heroes who are involved in intriguing plots, unusual situations and solve problems for the heroine with derring-do - then you will be disappointed. As you can tell from previous reviews, this is true of a lot of readers who rushed to buy Beverley's latest effort in the Rogue series.
However, take heart, those of you who admire Beverley for her well drawn characters and well written prose - you will be pleasantly surprised. Although not her best, it is still a pretty good book and far superior to a lot of Regency stuff being put out these days.
The hero of this book is Stephen Ball, MP - one of the Rogues who has only appeared around the edges of several previous books. Given his background and profession (law) he is not given to extravagant actions and showy heroics; just careful plotting and steadfast love for Laura Gardeyne who he nicknamed Lady Skylark based on her life in society with her first husband (fairly recently deceased).
The plot of this book is fairly well summarized by wmr-uk's review so I will not repeat it here - and it is correctly characterized as a "dramatic" one. However the pace of the book is fairly slow and I, for one, found myself a bit impatient for the next step of unraveling the mystery of the missing heir. The strength of the book is in watching Laura develop as a character and in enjoying the cast of secondary characters, especially HG and Des. It is nice to see Nick and Eleanor again; but I could barely remember who David Kerslake was (maybe I didn't finish that book, it being a bit too extravagant in plot for me).
My assessment: 3 and a half stars - read the reviews carefully and decide WHY you like Jo Beverley's books before getting this one...
