Springtime in Styria. And that means war.
There have been nineteen years of blood. The ruthless Grand Duke Orso is locked in a vicious struggle with the squabbling League of Eight, and between them they have bled the land white. While armies march, heads roll and cities burn, and behind the scenes bankers, priests and older, darker powers play a deadly game to choose who will be king.
War may be hell but for Monza Murcatto, the Snake of Talins, the most feared and famous mercenary in Duke Orso's employ, it's a damn good way of making money too. Her victories have made her popular - a shade too popular for her employer's taste. Betrayed, thrown down a mountain and left for dead, Murcatto's reward is a broken body and a burning hunger for vengeance. Whatever the cost, seven men must die.
Her allies include Styria's least reliable drunkard, Styria's most treacherous poisoner, a mass-murderer obsessed with numbers and a Northman who just wants to do the right thing. Her enemies number the better half of the nation. And that's all before the most dangerous man in the world is dispatched to hunt her down and finish the job Duke Orso started...

Starred Review. Abercrombie returns to the blood-drenched arena of the First Law trilogy (The Blade Itself, etc.) with this skillfully crafted and bleakly humorous sword and sorcery adventure. Duke Orso imagines that he can become king by ending the civil wars that have devastated Styria, but he errs by trying to kill his overly popular general, mercenary Monza Murcatto. Recovering from her massive injuries and mourning her murdered brother, Monza vows vengeance on Orso and half a dozen of his accomplices. Employing her own motley crew of death dealers, Monza gets her revenge, but it's neither simple nor satisfying; each target requires fresh strategy, and each death has unexpected effects. Abercrombie is both fiendishly inventive and solidly convincing, especially when sprinkling his appallingly vivid combat scenes with humor so dark that it's almost ultraviolet. (Aug.)

Review
"The battles are vivid and visceral, the action brutal, the pace headlong, and Abercrombie piles the betrayals, reversals, and plot twists one atop another to keep us guessing how it will all come out. This is his best book yet." --- George R.R. Martin
"Joe Abercrombie takes the grand tradition of high fantasy literature and drags it down into the gutter, in the best possible way. Monza is a beautiful mercenary who has sworn to kill the seven men who tried to kill her. No elves, no wands - just lots of down-and-dirty swordplay." --- Time
"Abercrombie is both fiendishly inventive and solidly convincing, especially when sprinkling his appallingly vivid combat scenes with humor so dark that it's almost ultraviolet." --- Publishers Weekly

I've read a lot of Joe's work. Most are very good.
Not this one however. It is the worst book I have read in sometime. Not one redeemable character in the story.Add in that the story jumps from one gory fight scene to another. For me the book was flawed from the beginning. The protagonist was fleshed out poorly and the side kicks were utterly miserable. The countryside and the cultures they inhabited made little sense and was hard to read. It was not to my liking.

The Count of Monte Cristo on steroids...Great and bloody Fun!
By Scott Masterton
Monza Murcatto is upset...really upset. She's been thrown down a mountain and left for dead. On top of that her brother Benna has been murdered before her very eyes. All of this done by her close friends and colleagues on order of Duke Orso, the man that she has fought for and sworn to put a crown on his head.
At first glance, "Best Served Cold" by Joe Abercrombie is a straight forward tale of revenge; one that could easily be found in any Steven Seagal or Jean Claude Van Damme film. At least that's how it appears in the first chapter. The truth is, that "Best Served Cold" is an in depth character study and a highly entertaining study of why (As the Chinese say) "When setting out for revenge...first dig two graves". As in Abercrombie's First Law series (this one by the way takes place in the same world), no one is a good guy; motivations and character of all the players are suspect. This is a world much like ours, where the White Hats don't always triumph...in fact the White Hat guys and Black Hat guys constantly swap headgear.
Monza is pitched off a mountain. All reasonable men would assume her dead. However, she's nursed back to health by a mysterious gentlemen interested in bones. Her body is riddled with scars and her sword hand permanently ruined by the crushing boots of her assailants. But Monza is pissed, and anger drives her to retrain her body to fight left handed and dig up a hidden fortune that she might use it like Alexander Dumas' Edmond Dantès to find justice. She gathers to her all those she needs to bring her bloody vengeance to fruition: A torturer, a northern berserker (who just wants to do good), a poisoner, a sociopath ex-con and a drunken Nicomo Cosca (her former mentor and boss).
This is a great morality tale because it really shows the pitfalls of vengeance and the character of Monza is forced to see herself through the mirror of other perceptions. The simple revenge plot becomes one of perspective and Monza begins to see that her binging thrown from the mountain might have been exactly what she deserved.
This is a ripping good yarn from a fabulous new author.

Memorable characters and great dialogue
By Marty McNutt
Best Served Cold was my first venture into the fantasy genre, and I am very satisfied with it. This book is very character-driven; it is not simply moulded by the events encountered by the characters. Each character has a very distinct personality that is more than adequately developed throughout the book. Trust me: by the end, you will be very attached to a few of them and sad to see the story finish.
The book certainly has a reputation for being explicit and gory, but everything feels entirely natural while reading it. None of the violence seems to be forced or overpowering given the nature of the story. If anything, it is just meticulously described and detailed.
Though I appreciated the generous character development, I was also thrilled to read the highly engaging action sequences. There was nothing cliche or over-done about them. They were just the right length and made smart transitions to other events occuring simultaneously.
My only complaint is probably my own fault, but sometimes I had a hard time keeping names straight. There was an instance or two where a seemingly-important name is dropped, only to never appear again. Not a big complaint at all, I just find it easier to have fewer characters' names to remember (or think I have to remember). All in all, though, this is a very good book and I highly recommend it to genre fans or to people looking into the genre for the first time!
