Adventures of Kwa, Man of the Jungle by acclaimed pulp author Perley Poore Sheehan.
Kwa's father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Rahan, who was pregnant with Nathaniel (later to be renamed Kwa), were flying across Africa when they crossed over a large, round valley ringed with mountains.
Unfortunately, the plane crashed into this valley, the Valley of Mu.
The father died on impact and the mother survived only long enough to give birth to Nathaniel, who was then found and raised by apes.
He was given the name Kwa the Golden One, by a chimp-like pre-human, Kek, who teaches him to speak with the animals of the jungle.
Kwa grows up, learns to speak a secret, universal "animal language" and learns the ways of living in the jungle.
The Valley of Mu is home to all sorts of magic and weird creatures--spider men, minotaurs, talking monkeys, thumb-sized squirrels and even albino killer crocs!
Full of intrigue and adventure, these classics are a must for adventure-pulp literature fans!

Two good tales

It would be a shame if someone skipped this title because of one negative review. I almost did, but I finally gave it a try and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The stories, though old-time pulp, are well-written. Pulp writers were paid a few cents per word. To increase their profits, they'd be very descriptive, often using many adjectives and excessive verbiage to flesh out their stories. Such padding could easily prove detrimental to the finished product, but not always. In the hands of a talented wordsmith, the artistry of the tale-teller could override the financial necessity of using two words where one would suffice, and the resulting story could still be quite grand. Paul Regard (the real name of Kwa's creator) was such an author. For example, in the first few chapters the battle between Sobek the crocodile and Kwa is sheer poetry. It also sets the tone; this is a story to savor and enjoy, not rush through. It little matters if this is not a "realistic" jungle, first because the deep, dark, mysterious jungles of times past no longer "really" exist as once depicted (if, indeed, they ever did), and second because this is the dream-world jungle of imagination seen largely from the perspective of its nonhuman inhabitants. This is their world and their view of it, difficult to convey in human terms, but which Regard, using his word magic, enables us to glimpse and to feel. This is what makes these stories so interesting. Obviously Kwa may seem a poor man's Tarzan, but apart from that, these two well-crafted pulp "novels" are very entertaining and well worth experiencing. One doesn't choose to read pulp tales expecting "great" literature, but sometimes one does get more than one might reasonably expect. Approach these with realistic expectations, and they will pleasantly surprise you.

Mystical take on the "feral" man.

An interesting, mystical take on the "feral" man genre of pulp fiction. In Sheehan's two short novellas, the jungle dwellers exist in a Edenic world. This is the stuff of myth. If you want realism, read ERB's Tarzan. If you want magic, read Kwa.
