History lesson in a good read

This book and Wouk's earlier one, Winds of War, describe a fictional family's life before and during World War II. The two books are one story. The great value of these two books are that the fictional characters keep the reader engaged with the factual history of the era. Through their eyes, I have seen Hitler, Stalin, Roosevelt, and Churchill. I've been in London during the bombings, to the siege of Stalingrad, to the fall of Singapore, on a battleship in the Pacific, to Oak Ridge, Tennessee, with the Manhattan Project, to two concentration camps, to the battle of Leyte Gulf, and to nearly every other place important to that war. Wouk uses the omniscient point of view, which allows him to know each character's mind, to speak his own, and to insert relevant information. Is it likely that one real family could experience all these situations? Of course not. Does Wouk's technique give me a working knowledge of World War II? You bet! Have I enjoyed the journey? Yes, and would recommend the reading of both books in their order to friends.

Both this volume and The Winds of War are excellent popular history and great reading

Clever portrayal of the U.S., England, Russia, Germany and Japan at war from 1941 till the end. Although Wouk provides extensive material on the Nazis' treatment and murder of the Jews, one comes away still uncomprehending of the enormity of the crimes. Both this volume and The Winds of War are excellent popular history and great reading.

Great Read

This is my 2nd read of Winds of War and War and Remembrance, love the stories woven into the history of WWII, both the lead up and time during the war, with stories coming from so many different perspectives, I have recommended both books to several friends and they've all enjoyed them - would love to see the mini series again, too
