This really scared me

I am a seasoned veteran of horror story collections and usually yawn at my latest victorian discovery. Not the case here, my friends. I was actually scared by this account of tales told by a group of clergymen to each other.
The best comparison I can offer is when, back in the 1970's, I went to see "The Exorcist." I went in laughing my ass off. Hey, another horror flick a la Vincent Price. I went home and cowered under my blankets and was still frightened for a week afterwards.
This book is just such a chilling and thrilling experience.

Supernatural Horror!

I loved this collection of horror tales. Many of these stories involve the supernatural and are quite eerie. If you enjoy classic supernatural horror written in proper English of the early 1900s then this is the book for you!

Well written, very interesting old fashioned ghost stories

These stories begin as 7 Catholic priests argue over the purpose of "ghostly" supernatural phenomena - are we meant to take a lesson from it, or is its purpose outside of what we ought to pay attention to and understand? As a group, each priest agrees to share something that they have experienced. As the book continues, visitors are also invited to the group to share.
These will never please a modern reader of horror stories. They are very subtle, with no gore or intense psychological drama, and in some cases, there is no definite conclusion to make. It's not clear if these were real occurrences told by a real group of people in the presence of the author, or a collection by the author using the characters of several speakers to convey them.
As a lover of old-fashioned ghost stories who is also Catholic, I savored my evening with these stories and hot cider on a late Winter evening. They are not the best, shivery ghost stories I've ever read, but they are very well written and seem to have a kindly flavor about them. I definitely recommend them, especially to anyone with old-fashioned tastes in literature.
