Steps to enlightenment & being touched by god are identical

The spoiler alert is that the entire book's details are in the title. I read it because I use the phrase, and others do, without having read the book...my aim was to correct that. I'm deep into Zen and appreciate this version and the author's familiarity with meditation

Translator substitutes Catholic mysticism with Eastern philosophy

This can barely be called a translation of Dark Night of the Soul. This is an interpretation and reshaping of St. John of the Cross's work that bears little resemblance to the author's original work. Starr intentionally removes all Christian language, deciding to translate El Diablo as "fragmented self" instead of using the word's clear meaning: "Devil". The beautiful Catholic concept of the Beatific Vision which St. John of the Cross is describing in most of this work is substituted, by Starr, with an eastern idea that posits union with God as the annihilation of the soul. If you compare Mirabai Starr's translation with that of E. Allison Peers you would be surprised to know that they were translations of the same text. Mirabai Starr has done a great disservice to those who earnestly seek out the work of a Doctor of the Church and instead get a pseudo-psychological interpretation of his work that is overwrought with New Age and Buddhist overtones.
